Once infected, virus travels to brain causing inflammation, coma and in some cases death. No cure, only treated with post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) series of injections that prevent virus spreading.

Bats are known carriers of rabies, spread through saliva, most common carriers. Also carry dangerous fungus Histoplasma capsulatum found in droppings, if inhaled can cause respiratory infection histoplasmosis.

If Bitten by BatWash wound thoroughly soap and water, seek medical attention tell professional bitten by bat, CDC recommends vaccinations within 24h.
